Admissions

Children are referred for Special Education following assessments made by a number of professionals, as well as contributions from parents and carers, which leads to a written Education and Health Care Plan.

Written referrals containing information about a child’s needs will be sent to the Head Teacher by the Local Authority in order to consider carefully whether their Education and Health Care Plan can be met by The Dales School. We aim to reply to requests within two weeks whenever possible.

Parents and Carers are welcome to contact the school to arrange a visit where they will be given the opportunity to view the school and talk to our Family officer about our provision. For initial enquiries please contact Mrs Glynis Burn 01670 352556 at our Blythdale site.

What happens next?

If the school can meet the requirements of the child’s Education and Health Care Plan, we will contact the Local Authority SEND department. We will then arrange visits for parents if they have not visited and discuss a start date with parents and the SEND department.

If we feel that we need more information to make a decision as to whether we can meet the needs of an Education and Health Care Plan, we will endeavour to visit the setting of the child, meet with them and their class teachers. We will then contact the SEND department as to whether we can meet the child’s Plan.

Once a child has a place at The Dales, we will arrange a half day visit for the child. Some of the children will be ready to start full days but others will need to be integrated slowly over time, this is due to each child’s individual needs. We will work with parents and the Local authority in this.

Which Site?

We endeavour to place children as close to their locality as possible. We always discuss any preference to which site would best meet the child's needs and wherever possible work towards accommodating their views.
