This week we learnt about history, we spent time with the Normans. Discovering about the battle of Hastings 1066, how William the Conquer became king of England. We are creating are own version of the Bayeux Tapestry encouraging the children to use their fine motor skills.

Thank you to Brian Nicholson, who had kindly donated some fantastic gardening equipment to the school.
This week in outdoor learning we have looked at parts of the plant. We looked at how seeds grow and planted pumpkin seeds and watermelon seeds. We look forward to when they are fully grown to eat.

Train Blog

Neil from Alan Valley kindly gave up his Saturday with help from Mr Groundwater to take the seats out of the train. Thank you to Aln Valley for their commitment and work towards the Dales Train Project. We are looking forward to a trip to see Neil’s Pacer train,(Pictured below) as he has recently qualified to be a pacer train driver.
We had some BIG news from Northern Rail. We were successful in their Seedcorn Fun ding. Also a big thank you to the people who have donated on JustGiving me page.

British Values and World Book Day!

What a busy week Orange Class have had!

 

we’ve kicked off this half term by learning about British Values. We were very interested to learn about The UK (and were amazed that the UK flag was the English, Irish and Scottish flags combined!)

First, we looked at Rule of Law. We read Oh No, George! and laughed lots at all of the things that went wrong, but then talked about how important rules and laws are and why we follow them to help keep us safe.

Then, we read Zog and the Flying Doctors to help us learn about Individual Liberty. We drew around our hands and decorated them, then wrote in an adjective that we thought described ourselves and made us special. We turned these into a wreath and made shields to show what makes us individual and special. Here are Lennox and Thomas’ shields!

We read This Is Our House to help us understand democracy. We talked about how important it is that everyone has a voice and discussed voting. It was then up to the children to decide which games we would play in PE through voting! To learn about Mutual Respect and Tolerance, we read The Pirates Next Door. We talked about pirates before reading the story – most of the children said they would want the pirates to move away and had a negative view of them before reading the book, but this quickly changed! They decided it was important to get to know someone before deciding what they would be like and talked about the different beliefs in the UK and how it’s great to be different!

 

On Thursday, it was World Book Day! The day started off with an investigation – someone had stolen the books! The children showed fantastic teamwork and problem solving skills when they read the clues and solved the mystery! They then worked together to write their own stories.

B8 Cedar class have enjoyed listening to and making up their own stories this week, we particularly enjoyed World book day we decorated our door in the theme of the BFG. The BFG collected dreams and we drew and wrote about our own collections.

This week class B7 have celebrated World Book Day by reading and listening to some of their favourite stories. They have found out about the author A.A Milne and the stories of Winnie the Pooh. They made maps of the 100 Acre Wood (the garden) and found the characters from the stories. They then visited some real woods (Plessey Woods) and played Pooh Sticks on the bridges.
B7 also welcomed their teacher Mrs Holly Clark to their class who has returned to school following her maternity leave.

This week in Sycamore Class (B6) we have introduced our new topic – The UK – by looking at some classic British animated shows. The children have watched a range of classic animated shows from The Clangers to Wallace and Gromit and recorded their own reviews of each show. The children have then used their art and design skills to create plasticine characters, using the Stop-motion app on the iPads to create their own animated show. We’ve also been celebrating World Book Day this week, reading the story Mr. Men and Little Miss in London. The children have researched the various sights the characters visited in London, creating presentations on the laptops, and have painted their own Mr. Men linked to the zones of regulation.

Happy Half Term from Blue Class!

It’s been a very productive week in Blue class, as we’ve made a new friend called Beegu!

Beegu is a little alien who’s gotten lost on earth and needed our help to feel better. We’ve done lots of incredible work with a special focus on colours, emotions and friendship.

On Monday we read Beegu, and came up with lots of ideas about how Beegu felt during the story and why. We thought about the colours of Beegu’s emotions, and then painted beautiful pictures using all the colours we had discussed.

On Tuesday, Blue class had a special trip to Druridge Bay! We walked all the way around the lake, had a picnic and a play in the play area, and then walked down to the sea to play on the beach. Blue class were fantastically good on their trip, so we all had a great time! Well done everyone!

We have made friends for Beegu in our junk modelling sessions, paying attention to the things we like from our friends. Everyone did an amazing job, and Beegu’s friends are as varied as we are! We did some brilliant detailed writing about the friends we made, made friendship bracelets, and even some puppets!

On Thursday we had a really close look at Beegu’s body language and how art can inform emotions. We then made some amazing watercolour artworks, labelled with emotions, to talk about how colours can represent how we feel.

Our class dinner this week was on the theme of Italy, so Blue class made some incredible Pizzas and Pasta Bolognese. We sat together for lunch and everyone tried something new to eat that they had made themselves.

Blue class have had an amazing end to the half term, and we hope you all enjoy your week!

This week in B12 we went on a trip to Plessey Woods!! We went puddle jumping, searched for Shrek and found the fairy houses. We ended the trip off with a great time in the park!! And even though it was wet and muddy the kids (and adults) had a really fun time.

A Rawr-Some Half Term!

We’ve had a fab end to our half term and our last week with our topic Jurassic Park!

The children made their own volcanoes and then added different ingredients and quantities to see if they could make them erupt. They focussed on language for measurement and listened to each other brilliantly!

We’ve looked at 2D and 3D shapes, including going on a hunt for them around school and then designed our own Shape-O-Saurus dinosaurs!

Our story this week was If You Happen To Have A Dinosaur. The children found the story hilarious and loved coming up with different scanties for what they would do if they found a dinosaur. They used colourful semantics to come up with their own sentences to describe what was happening in their pictures.

It’s been a fantastic half term! We hope you all have a lovely break and we can’t wait to see you after the holidays to start our new topic, The UK.
