A Bug’s Life!

8th July 2021Chloe Downey

This week we have been on a minibeast adventure! We visited Plessey Woods and explored the school garden to find minibeasts in their natural environment. We compared their similarities and differences using viewfinders to study their features.

We thought about the different microhabitats that minibeasts live in and used our knowledge to create fact files. We chose materials that would suit each insect and created comfy bug hotels.

Ashington Life Centre

1st July 2021Chloe Downey

This week we were given a challenge: to help others who are not as fortunate as us. We thought about things that humans need to survive and created lists of useful things that we could put inside ‘blessing bags’ for the homeless.

We created designs on to cardboard templates and stitched the templates together with fabric to create bags. We made flapjacks and bought other items such as soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and water to fill the bags with. The bags will be donated to Ashington Life Centre alongside some cards with good wishes. Well done 5B

Going Live!

26th May 2021Chloe Downey

This week class 5B have explored famous characters through the ages. We have talked about our favourite cartoon characters and made posters to promote their qualities. We considered how much loved characters have evolved over time and used our knowledge of place value to order creations over time.

We have thought about YouTube and what it means for the world. Can anybody have their own blog?! We talked about our personal interests and each created a YouTube blog video to showcase what we are experts in. Cats? Tractors? Being a good friend? We have you covered!

Over and out…

Superheroes assemble!

4th May 2021Chloe Downey

This week we have been thinking about superheroes! What are their powers? How do they help people? Why do they want to help?

We created our own superheroes and thought about their individual qualities and how they would look. We thought about superhero costumes and what they need to be made of to protect us from the elements. Our materials experiment was messy but extremely fun!

We ended the week by thinking about different places that superheroes could travel. We used atlases and Google Maps to find villages, towns and cities around the UK and talked about what we might like there. Where to next?!

5B Sharing and caring

23rd April 2021Chloe Downey

This week class 5B have thought about people we admire in our families. We brought in photos of our loved ones and talked about why we care about them. We considered Prince Philip’s funeral and how his loved ones may have felt mourning his death. We all felt very sad for our Queen and identified her as possibly feeling in the ‘blue’ zone.

We created a timeline of our own lives and reflected on how we’ve grown, changed and our hopes and dreams for the future. We all have very exciting plans and look forward to making them a reality!

5B Easter fun!

16th April 2021Chloe Downey

This week we have enjoyed exploring eggs and chocolate! We tried different types of chocolate and talked about what we liked about them before creating our own chocolates using a range of different textures. We voted for our favourite chocolates and used the information to create tally and bar charts. In the school house we made our own snacks and hot drinks and practiced taking turns in conversations to share our likes and dislikes.

We ended the week with computing! We programmed Codeapillars and Ozobots to follow a trail. Our Codeapillars found some Easter eggs on the way which, after answering questions, revealed a secret word (Easter!) It was a challenge to create routes that our robots could follow but lots of fun!

We hope you have a wonderful Easter!

5B Together again!

12th March 2021Chloe Downey

Our week started with a big breakfast that we cooked ourselves in the cookery room. We made choices, followed instructions and enjoyed sharing our breakfast together.

We have been reading the story of Errol’s Garden by Gillian Hibbs. We designed our own dream gardens and chose who we would share them with. We looked closely at and named the parts of flowers that we would find in the garden.

In PE some of us went on the big trampoline in the gym (the rest of us will have our turn next week!)

We thought about our wonderful Mam’s and made some rainbow lollipop sticks to describe them. We also made some very special cards and gifts.

We hope you all enjoy a lovely Mother’s Day.

Blythdale Bubble 2 Home Learning

14th January 2021Liz Sanderson

 Home Learning

Blythdale – Bubble 2

Dear Parents/Carers,

As you are aware, The Dales School is having to limit the number of children attending school each day to ensure the necessary health and safety measures are in place for both children and staff to keep everyone as safe as possible.

During this time we want to do everything we can to support you and your child at home with their learning journey. Our aim is to work closely with you to provide a personalised approach to home learning so that your child can make good progress in all areas of their development.

We recognise that every family’s situation is different and hope that you and your child are able to make good use of our offer.

  • We will telephone you each week to discuss how we can support your child.
  • We will provide a pack of resources to support your child with their learning including a visual timetable.
  • We will share your child’s basic and life skills targets with suggestions of how they can be supported at home.
  • We will provide you with a range of resources both online and in paper based forms to supplement our planned activities.
  • We will provide three learning activities per day that cover a range of curriculum areas. These will be posted on Tapestry or included in your pack.
  • We will arrange a live Zoom session twice weekly so that your child can see and communicate with their staff team and classmates.

Our timetable will stay the same each week so that the children know what to expect. You can access the activities at times that are suited to you throughout the day and set your child’s timetables up as you see best fit.

Happy Christmas 5B

17th December 2020Liz Sanderson

Class 5B have been celebrating Christmas this week. We made our Christmas Movie Night hampers ( we hope your family enjoy them), we had a disco in the snow in the garden and enjoyed a movie in the classroom.

We have also written some special letters to Santa and Santa delivered some presents to our classroom- it was very exciting! We finished our week by making Christingles to think about what Christmas is all about.

We wish you all a very merry Christmas.

5B It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…..

11th December 2020Liz Sanderson

Class 5B have really got into the Christmas spirit this week. We put up our decorations in the classroom and hung the decoration we made on the tree in the entrance hall. In the Winter Wonderland garden we watched The Snowman in Santa’s workshop.

We have made Christmas cards and presents, but we won’t say too much about those yet! We have even made a present for our friends in Class 4B.

We all sat together to enjoy our Christmas dinner, pull crackers and have a thoroughly festive time.
