B6 – Knights and Dragons of the UK

This week B6 have continued finding out about the history of the UK and it’s castles by delving into some of the myths and legends around knights and dragons from across the country. The children have followed step-by-step instructions to build their own dragon, and used the iPads to find out where different dragon legends have started in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. They’ve also spent some time hearing the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, as well as hearing stories of some famous battles and sieges that really took place. The children have used their knowledge of mediaeval knights to design and build their own swords and shields, as well as design their own army of knights – using their number and addition skills to add up the cost of all of the knights’ equipment.

B6 have practiced their reading, spelling and writing skills in phonics, and some have continued writing their own storybooks. In addition the children have practiced their social skills in Lego therapy sessions, and demonstrated their independence skills by cooking big breakfast for the class – sharing out the cooking, cleaning, table-setting and serving tasks between themselves.

B6 Knights & Castles

This week B6 have been learning about some of the history of the UK. They have found out about castles and what they were used for, using their knowledge to design, build and paint their own junk model castle. The children have also identified the different countries of the UK, locating and creating a map of famous castles in different parts of the country using the laptops and ipads. Alongside their regular English lessons, practicing key literacy skills, B6 have found out about mediaeval battles, using addition and number work to calculate the cost of an army. As well as this they have designed their own swords and shields while learning about the everyday life of knights and their coats of arms.

B6 – Life at the coast

This week B6 have continued learning about the UK’s coastline, turning their attention to the science side of things by learning about the plants, animals and habitats at the coast. The children have learned the names of different animals that you would find on the beach, and have studied food chains and food webs. The children have used food webs to create a coastal food chain poster on the computers, and have also created a short animation of a food chain in action using plasticine and stop-motion. B6 have also practiced their life skills, taking responsibility for their own safety, on a visit to Seaton Delaval Hall and the beach and learning to safely make campfires in the garden.

This week in Sycamore Class (B6) we have introduced our new topic – The UK – by looking at some classic British animated shows. The children have watched a range of classic animated shows from The Clangers to Wallace and Gromit and recorded their own reviews of each show. The children have then used their art and design skills to create plasticine characters, using the Stop-motion app on the iPads to create their own animated show. We’ve also been celebrating World Book Day this week, reading the story Mr. Men and Little Miss in London. The children have researched the various sights the characters visited in London, creating presentations on the laptops, and have painted their own Mr. Men linked to the zones of regulation.

B6: Mental Health Awareness Week

This week B6 have been carrying out activities to learn about mental health and well-being. Alongside their usual phonics activities – practising reading, spelling and handwriting – the children have taken part in a number of tasks based around the zones of regulation. The children have learned about how to recognise different emotions from faces in the green, red, blue and yellow zone and have made themselves a ‘My Zones Book’ to help them remember. The children have also thought about what they can do to keep healthy, and about what makes them happy – using laptops, paint and photographs to create a mixed media ‘happiness board’ about themselves. B6 have spent time in the garden this week, digging out an area of ground ready for some new seating to be installed and spotting different types of birds, and have been on the trampoline again in their rebound sessions.

The children have ended the week by taking part in a carousel to try out and rate how effective a number of different self regulation strategies are, ranging from listening to music and painting, to bouncing on the yoga ball and carrying heavy objects. Each individual has rated each of these and identified a number of different strategies for helping themselves to calm and feel happier. There’re a few pictures up on evidence for learning from the key learning activities of the week, so if you get a chance log on and have a look!
