6B Discovering Diwali

This week class 6B have been finding out all about the Hindu celebration of Diwali which took place last weekend. The children have learned about the story behind it all – the story of Rama and Sita, and created their own pop-up story scenes showing the moment the demon king kidnaps princess Sita! They have found out about Diva lamps, and how it is a symbol during the festival, of light triumphing over darkness, and printed their own Rangoli patterns from recycled materials, learning how they are thought to bring luck during Diwali.

The children have also tried some traditional foods that are often eaten at Diwali, cooking their own vegetable curry and making their own coconut-square sweets. In outdoor learning the children have made their own pens and inks from natural material, and have used Google maps to find out where India is in the world and locate some famous landmarks of the country such as the Taj Mahal.

5A Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This week Class 5 have carried a variety of activities still based on the film Charlie in the chocolate factory. We have had a really busy week, we made our own TV’s using shoes boxes and even shrunk ourselves so we could fit into them! We then used the iPad’s to create a short clip. We have been researching the Ancient Maya civilization and found out that they worshipped the god of cocoa! We have also visited ‘Karen Kiosk’ to purchase different fruits so we could measure and weigh the fruits to create a fruit smoothie, they were all yummy! Class 5 have also made there own chocolate bar, we used a range of different flavorings to mix into our chocolate as well as adding a little secret surprise.

Well done Class 5, you have all worked so hard this week!

2A Sandwiches and sums

This week we had a new book called ’Sam’s sandwich’, about a boy who made a sandwich for his sister but added gross things like bugs and insects. We looked at how to make a sandwich and what bossy words to use in instructions.
In maths we practiced addition and subtraction using lots of fun food items like M&Ms and jelly beans. We played lots of counting games on the interactive whiteboard and practiced writing some numbers using whiteboards.
In science we looked at food – what is sweet, salty and sour, what is healthy and not healthy, which foods we like and don’t like. In Art and Design we started small projects. Some of us were Subway workers, designing sandwiches and the wrappers. Some were smoothie shop assistants, designing cups and making our own smoothies, and some of us where Wonka employees, designing and manufacturing chocolate bar wrappers.

Class 5B Remember

This week we found out why we wear poppies on Remembrance Day. We created our own poppies and Mrs Sanderson showed us photographs of poppies on the war memorial in Morpeth. We thought about our own memories and put them in order.

Then we thought about what it might have been like during the World Wars. We listened to music and made war time scones – we hope you liked them!

A Golden week in 11B

We have made some delicious pastries for our shop window display and created a supermarket in the classroom where prices are still reasonable. We have been doing lots of practical activities with money and I am sure we are going to make some good investments in the future. Our circus skills have improved, especially balancing. We have enjoyed two weeks of orienteering at Druridge Bay and Plessey woods, the children are loving exploring the environment and working well on their basic skills of orienteering such as map reading, navigation and direction.

A totally tasty week in Class 4A!

This week in class 4A we have followed the journey of Charlie Bucket and the other golden ticket winners to the Chocolate Factory. We have become inventors and created our own chocolate bars and advertised them on posters to help them sell all over the world!

We became scientists and made our own ice cream out of nothing more than some cream, ice cubes and zip lock bags. We even got to taste some of our work and it was delicious!

This week, we have remembered those who lost their lives in the war, and made poppies to say thank you for everything they did for us. In RE, we learnt about Diwali and why it is celebrated in some religions, and we made our own special floating tea lights.

I am looking forward to seeing what marvellous things you can create next week!

3A Spectacular Science

This week, in class 3A, we did some spectacular Science! We followed a set of instructions and used salt, ice cubes, cream, sugar, vanilla essence and lots and lots of shaking to make our own ice cream in a bag. We watched closely as we shook the salt and ice in a bag and it turned our cream, sugar and vanilla into ice cream. Magic! We then added our own toppings and tasted our creations, they were delicious!

Class 5A

This week Class 5 have continued to carry out Literacy work based on the book and film ‘Charlie in the chocolate factory!’. We have been learning all about the different characters, and looking closely at the different characteristics each character shows. Class 5 have tried really hard this week with their handwriting, spelling and punctuation. Well done everyone!

This week we went Orienteering to Plessey Woods, we were able to use our knowledge taught the previous week to help us find our way around. Louis (Orienteering leader) was really impressed with everyone’s skills!

In Science we carried out an experiment of making our own ice-cream.. It didn’t turn out as well as it should of however, it still tasted nice!

A Jam-packed week in 6B!

This week 6B have been doing lots of interesting things. They have continued to learn about instructions, writing their own set for making pancakes before having a go at making a delicious pancake for themselves! They have read the story of the Giant Jam sandwich, creating storyboards and then rewriting the story in their own words. In maths, the children have continued their work about money, making shopping lists and working out the money needed to buy the items from our roleplay supermarket and in science they have made themselves a balanced, healthy snack.

As well as this, the children have learned a little about what soldiers’ lives were like in World War 1 to mark Remembrance Day, printed poppy pictures using apples and red paint, and have mixed their own saltdough to sculpt their own poppy. As well as this we have welcomed a new boy into the class and played a few getting-to-know-you games!

2A A tiger-filled week for class

This week in 2A we have been practising our instructions. We have listened to and followed different instructions for washing hands, different moving activities and we even made jam sandwiches. We also got a postcard from our tiger friend who told us all about his jungle home in India. We talked about what jungles are like and we made a home for him. We also used different pictures of animals to match them to their homes.
In maths we practised our counting again through lots of different fun games and activities. We compared numbers and fed the tiger the biggest number. We did cupcake counting, building our fine motor skills through using the tweezers to count out the number in the cake cases. We also played counting games on the interactive board. Our favourite is the speed round where we count yetis as fast as we can.
For art this week we made our own playdough and decorated it like a tiger. We also made stripy biscuits again. In Makaton we practiced milk, juice, drink and eat, as well as some of our favourite Makaton songs, like the Alphabet song. For our treat this week, we painted bread with edible paint, with a Pudsey theme for ‘Children in need’. We did lots of fun Pudsey jobs.
