Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s super-6B!

4th May 2021Daniel Harrison

Continuing with our theme of present day people and characters we admire, 6B have started thinking about Stan Lee, the creator of Marvel Comics. Thinking about what it takes to develop a new superhero, over the course of the week the children have designed and made superhero costumes for their own superhero. The children started with the masks, looking at various masks through history such as ancient Egyptian Pharaoh’s masks, WW2 gas masks and even the modern medical mask, creating a timeline of the different designs. Taking inspiration from this, they used paper mache and thick card to build up a 3D mask of their own and painted these as part of their costume.

Reading up to the part in ‘Traction Man is Here’ where Traction Man receives a woolly romper suit, 6B have considered what materials would be suitable for a superhero costume in science, testing the waterproofing abilities of a range of different materials. They have also considered how superheroes like batman have changed in the way they look from the 1960s to nowadays and discussed this with their peers. Finally they have been learning to use measurements in maths, measuring themselves up for a superhero suit before designing and making their own superhero costumes.

Alongside this the children have been practicing their handwriting and sentence structure, phonics, speaking & listening and have been practicing their independence skills cooking up healthy pizzas in the cookery room.

Climate Change and our Worker of the Week!

4th May 2021Lizzie Tucker

This week our class has been looking at the work of Greta Thunberg and her Fridays for Future movement. Today, we discussed what climate change is and how it affects our planet. Aliesha, showed fantastic listening skills and offered amazing insight into her understanding of renewable and non-renewable energy. Aliesha also produced this astounding work and so has received our Worker of the Week certificate! WELL DONE Aliesha.

4th May 2021Alex Don

This week the children have been looking at People Who Help Us as part of our ‘Famous People’ topic. We have explored lots of different careers. Next week the children will be looking at Princesses and Superhero’s. Have a lovely bank holiday weekend 2B and enjoy the rest x

Superheroes assemble!

4th May 2021Chloe Downey

This week we have been thinking about superheroes! What are their powers? How do they help people? Why do they want to help?

We created our own superheroes and thought about their individual qualities and how they would look. We thought about superhero costumes and what they need to be made of to protect us from the elements. Our materials experiment was messy but extremely fun!

We ended the week by thinking about different places that superheroes could travel. We used atlases and Google Maps to find villages, towns and cities around the UK and talked about what we might like there. Where to next?!

5B Sharing and caring

23rd April 2021Chloe Downey

This week class 5B have thought about people we admire in our families. We brought in photos of our loved ones and talked about why we care about them. We considered Prince Philip’s funeral and how his loved ones may have felt mourning his death. We all felt very sad for our Queen and identified her as possibly feeling in the ‘blue’ zone.

We created a timeline of our own lives and reflected on how we’ve grown, changed and our hopes and dreams for the future. We all have very exciting plans and look forward to making them a reality!

6B Comics ‘r’ Us

23rd April 2021Daniel Harrison

This week, 6B have been thinking about people we admire, starting with those we admire from films and comics and focusing on superheroes. In English, we have started reading the story ‘Traction Man is Here’ and the children have worked together to answer comprehension questions about the start of the story. Using this as a starting point, the children have been working hard to create their own superhero photo comic strip.

The children have created their own superheroes, building a lego model of their hero and writing down their fantastic ideas about the heroes in their English books. In art the children have built themselves a set for their comic story to take place around, first looking at some famous landmarks from around the UK to give them inspiration, then using recycled junk to build their model. Finally, using some other toys from the classroom, 6B have used the DSLR cameras to set up the different scenes for their comic strips and taken photographs of each one, putting these together and writing out their comic book story.

The children have taken part in their usual handwriting, speaking & listening and phonics activities, as well as learning about personal independence and healthy eating by cooking mini-quiches in the cookery room – hopefully some of these made them home to you all! Last of all the children have started thinking about some modern people we admire, looking at the work of David Attenborough and creating stick insects with natural materials in the garden. Another great week for 6B!

6B Welcome Back!

16th April 2021Daniel Harrison

This week, the children of 6B have thrown themselves into our new topic of modern day famous people. They have talked about famous people they know, both real and fictional, and described a famous person of their choice to the rest of the class (we have learned the names of a lot of youtubers this week!). In maths we have practiced using place value, working out which is the tens and which is the ones, and have baked some banana and blueberry muffins in cookery as healthy treats.
The children have thought about themselves and created timelines of memories they have from being younger to right up until now, using cotton buds to paint images with. In science they have been testing out the properties of different materials with a range of experiments that have included using torches, testing flexibility with lego bridges and determining softness of the material with playdough.
Finally, in outdoor learning this week the children have done some tree rubbings, looking closely at the different bark textures, and have tended our area of the garden, weeding and watering to encourage our vegetables to grow. A great start to the term!

5B Easter fun!

16th April 2021Chloe Downey

This week we have enjoyed exploring eggs and chocolate! We tried different types of chocolate and talked about what we liked about them before creating our own chocolates using a range of different textures. We voted for our favourite chocolates and used the information to create tally and bar charts. In the school house we made our own snacks and hot drinks and practiced taking turns in conversations to share our likes and dislikes.

We ended the week with computing! We programmed Codeapillars and Ozobots to follow a trail. Our Codeapillars found some Easter eggs on the way which, after answering questions, revealed a secret word (Easter!) It was a challenge to create routes that our robots could follow but lots of fun!

We hope you have a wonderful Easter!

5B All aboard The Dales train!

16th April 2021Chloe Downey

We arrived back to school to find that something peculiar has landed in The Dales School yard… train tracks! Where are they from? Why are they here?

We took a virtual reality train ride to explore some of the different places trains can take us. We passed hills, valleys, beaches and woodlands on our journey. We made train tickets for our dream destinations and talked about why we would like to visit certain places.

Mr Groundwater revealed some great plans for our very own Dales train! We wrote him letters saying what we would like the train to look like. A Pokemon train? A soft play train? We hope he replies soon!

11B Super Heroes

16th April 2021Tracy Park

We have had a “super” start to the week with the children in 11b learning all about superheroes both in real life and fiction.  They started to look at what a real life super hero is and what characteristics they have.  Taking our theme into consideration we asked the children to think about what they would like to do when they are older and how they would go about succeeding in this career.  We set up an interview chair for them to practice answering some questions that may be asked in a real interview.  They did great and had lots of fun doing this.  We have also moved on to poetry with the children choosing a section of a verse and drawing a picture that is linked with this.
