3A Interesting Investigations

4th December 2020Ashley Brodie

This week class 3A have conducted lots of interesting investigations.

First we made our own bubble solutions and experimented with how many bubbles we could make inside a bubble.

Next we tested which type of water would make our gummy bears grow the biggest, we tested warm water, salt water and sugar water. We left our bears for 12 hours to grow and then we found out that the bears that were in warm water had grown the most. We also found a gummy bear escape scene in class, there was a trail of red gummy bears and jelly slime which led us to a gummy bear web. We had to use the tweezers to rescue the bears from the tangled web.

Then we carried out a cookie excavation! we used magnifying glasses to look closely at the cookies and think about what was inside them. We wrote our own cookie recipes then followed our recipes to bake our own chocolate chip cookies. They were very very tasty!

Next week we will begin our Christmas themed activities.

4A A world of pure imagination!

27th November 2020Jennifer Tatters

Class 4A have worked so hard this week and put a lot of effort and creativity into their work! At the start of the week they created their own rollercoasters, which would fit in well at any theme park. We put our taste buds to the test and created our own fizzy lifting drinks. Luckily we didn’t fly out of the classroom! We made some fantastic edible chocolate factories, some of them looked just like the one in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! We have also learned a lot about the journey of the cocoa bean, and we realised that there is a lot of work that goes into making the yummy treats we can buy at the shops!

You have all done a fantastic job this week, let’s continue the good work next week!

2A The Gingerbread Man

27th November 2020Beth Thompson

This week in 2A we read The Gingerbread Man. We answered lots of questions about the story and even made our own versions by changing characters and the setting. In maths we used the gingerbread men to play adding and taking away games. We also counted out jellies for the gingerbread man’s buttons. In RE we made lots of things to cheer up the gingerbread man, like houses to feel cosy and boats to get him across the river safely. We even decorated our own gingerbread men and gingerbread houses – Yum!
We looked at ice in science, trying to melt it in different ways such as pouring water on it, breathing on it or even just holding it. In art some of us used different sponges to paint a giant gingerbread man, while others practised different joining techniques such as sewing.
We have all behaved amazingly so had extra choose time, making the most of our café before it leaves us on Friday, ready for new Christmas areas next week. See you then.

5B India

27th November 2020Liz Sanderson

This week class 5B retold the story of Pattan’s Pumpkin through role play and thought about what the characters would say. They followed instructions to make Indian sweets called Coconut Ladoo’s, we hope you like them!

We looked at google earth to find India again and compared the Western Ghat region with Northumberland. They both have mountains!

We also thought about how to keep ourselves clean and had a go at brushing our teeth with new toothbrushes.

3A A busy week

27th November 2020Ashley Brodie

On Monday we designed and then made our own Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired roller coasters. We even had our own virtual roller coaster ride!

On Tuesday we experimented with our own ‘Fizzy lifting drinks’ we made our drinks using sparkling water, edible glitter and lots of different fruit juices. The prune juice did not go down well!

On Wednesday we created our own edible chocolate factories, we thought very carefully about what each element of our factories represented… they also tasted delicious!

On Thursday we worked with class 4 and 5 to learn all about the journey of the cocoa bean and how the chocolate we buy from the shop gets to the shelves. It was very interesting and we enjoyed working with new friends.

On Friday we made our own ‘Big Breakfast’, we practiced our life skills and made beans on toast, scrambled egg and delicious breakfast pancakes. We placed our orders, prepared the surfaces hygienically and made our own breakfast.

What a busy week!

Have a lovely weekend 3A.

6B A super busy week

27th November 2020Daniel Harrison

This week the children in 6B have been reading the story Pattan’s Pumpkin. They have learned a little bit about some of the areas in the book, which is set in India, and have compared pictures of the landscape there with the landscape of Northumberland. The children have written postcards to Pattan, telling him why they think he should visit Northumberland. In maths the children have been talking about times: o’clock and half past, and thinking about when they do things during the day like have breakfast, brush their teeth and go to bed, as well as some more practice recording times, using the stopwatches to record how long it takes for their friend to build a small Lego model.

The children have sculpted and painted their own version of the setting for Pattan’s Pumpkin in art and have used this to retell a scene from the story. They used the ipads with their setting to make a stop-motion video of the scene when Pattan brings the pumpkin home and it grows enormous! In science they have planted their own seeds in readiness for planting out their own vegetable garden in spring time. We have talked about individual responsibility and the children have been given their own jobs to be responsible for around the classroom.

Class 5A

27th November 2020Demi Stroughton

This week Class 5 have worked so hard. We have been making our own roller coasters using junk modelling, we have also made our own fizzy lifting drinks which got our taste buds tingling. We made our very own edible chocolate factory’s which turned out better than Mr.Willy Wonkas! We have also learnt a lot about the cocoa bean and the amount of effort it takes to make a chocolate bar! This week we visited Bolam Lake to carry out our orienteering tasks.

Great work this week Class 5, only 3 more weeks to go!

5B Pattan’s Pumpkin and Diwali

23rd November 2020Liz Sanderson

This week class 5B travelled to India. We read the story of Pattan’s Pumpkin by Chitra Soundar about a farmer who grew an enormous pumpkin and saved the animals from a great flood. Pattan wrote us a letter and asked us to make a curry using vegetables from his farm. It tasted delicious!
We looked on google earth and found the Sahyadri Mountains where the story was based. We watched a film and chose pictures of the animals, people and places from the area to describe.
Last Saturday it was Diwali. We found out that Diwali is celebrated by the Hindu religion  all over the world. We made some crafts to celebrate including Diva lamps and Rangoli patterns.

3A Amazing Artwork

20th November 2020Ashley Brodie

This week class 3A have created some amazing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired artwork!

We have used our Design Technology skills to plan our artwork, we have used our Literacy skills and phonic knowledge to write lists of the resources we need to create our design ideas. We have independently collected our own resources, used our Math’s skills to measure our creations and we have also worked scientifically to test our work.

We have had great fun learning this week!

Have a great weekend class 3A.

4A Chocolatiers!

20th November 2020Jennifer Tatters

This week in class 4A we have had a scrumdidillyunctious week! We made our own TVs and shrunk pictures of ourselves to imagine we had been shrunk like Mike Teavee from Charlie and the Chocolate factory! We also made moving backgrounds for our TV’s which worked really well!

We took a step back in time and looked at how the Mayans made their hot chocolate. We weren’t ready to try our hot chocolate with a kick of chilli, but we tried it with a bit of cinnamon in! We also made some lovely Mayan houses and clay mugs!

We ended the week by making our own chocolate creations! We took a taste test of secret flavours and added our favourite flavours to our melted chocolate. We then picked some toppings to add to our chocolate and waited patiently for them to set in the fridge. They looked delicious!
