Marvellous Marvel

10th May 2021Daniel Harrison

This week 6B have been focusing on the life of Stan Lee, the creator of Marvel Comics. Following a couple of weeks looking at different superheroes, this week the class have been creating designs for their own web pages about their creator, Stan Lee. The children have practiced their skills using timelines, ordering events in his life, and have written in their English books about some of their favourite superheroes created by him.

The children have used the school computers to type up some facts about Stan Lee’s life, as well as create a title for their design, using different sizes, fonts and colours to add interest. Taking inspiration from Andy Warhol’s pop-art style, they have also produced a piece of work using a template of their favourite Marvel character to add to their webpage design, before putting it all together and sharing their designs with their peers, and giving lots of positive feedback.

As well as all this, 6B have worked hard (as usual!) in their phonics sessions, and have practiced their subtraction skills using apparatus such as numicon and lego bricks to help them out. They’ve also been in the kitchen, chopping vegetables and cooking noodles to make healthy, but more importantly delicious, stir-fries!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s super-6B!

4th May 2021Daniel Harrison

Continuing with our theme of present day people and characters we admire, 6B have started thinking about Stan Lee, the creator of Marvel Comics. Thinking about what it takes to develop a new superhero, over the course of the week the children have designed and made superhero costumes for their own superhero. The children started with the masks, looking at various masks through history such as ancient Egyptian Pharaoh’s masks, WW2 gas masks and even the modern medical mask, creating a timeline of the different designs. Taking inspiration from this, they used paper mache and thick card to build up a 3D mask of their own and painted these as part of their costume.

Reading up to the part in ‘Traction Man is Here’ where Traction Man receives a woolly romper suit, 6B have considered what materials would be suitable for a superhero costume in science, testing the waterproofing abilities of a range of different materials. They have also considered how superheroes like batman have changed in the way they look from the 1960s to nowadays and discussed this with their peers. Finally they have been learning to use measurements in maths, measuring themselves up for a superhero suit before designing and making their own superhero costumes.

Alongside this the children have been practicing their handwriting and sentence structure, phonics, speaking & listening and have been practicing their independence skills cooking up healthy pizzas in the cookery room.

6B Comics ‘r’ Us

23rd April 2021Daniel Harrison

This week, 6B have been thinking about people we admire, starting with those we admire from films and comics and focusing on superheroes. In English, we have started reading the story ‘Traction Man is Here’ and the children have worked together to answer comprehension questions about the start of the story. Using this as a starting point, the children have been working hard to create their own superhero photo comic strip.

The children have created their own superheroes, building a lego model of their hero and writing down their fantastic ideas about the heroes in their English books. In art the children have built themselves a set for their comic story to take place around, first looking at some famous landmarks from around the UK to give them inspiration, then using recycled junk to build their model. Finally, using some other toys from the classroom, 6B have used the DSLR cameras to set up the different scenes for their comic strips and taken photographs of each one, putting these together and writing out their comic book story.

The children have taken part in their usual handwriting, speaking & listening and phonics activities, as well as learning about personal independence and healthy eating by cooking mini-quiches in the cookery room – hopefully some of these made them home to you all! Last of all the children have started thinking about some modern people we admire, looking at the work of David Attenborough and creating stick insects with natural materials in the garden. Another great week for 6B!

6B Welcome Back!

16th April 2021Daniel Harrison

This week, the children of 6B have thrown themselves into our new topic of modern day famous people. They have talked about famous people they know, both real and fictional, and described a famous person of their choice to the rest of the class (we have learned the names of a lot of youtubers this week!). In maths we have practiced using place value, working out which is the tens and which is the ones, and have baked some banana and blueberry muffins in cookery as healthy treats.
The children have thought about themselves and created timelines of memories they have from being younger to right up until now, using cotton buds to paint images with. In science they have been testing out the properties of different materials with a range of experiments that have included using torches, testing flexibility with lego bridges and determining softness of the material with playdough.
Finally, in outdoor learning this week the children have done some tree rubbings, looking closely at the different bark textures, and have tended our area of the garden, weeding and watering to encourage our vegetables to grow. A great start to the term!

6B Preparing for Easter

25th March 2021Daniel Harrison

This week class 6B have been getting ready for Easter and working on our space in the garden. The children have talked with each other about what they are planning to do in the Easter holidays and have written about it in their English books. The children have also practiced giving compliments to each other and done lots of turn-taking practice, showing they are good listeners and waiting for their turn to speak. In Maths they have been working on 2D shapes, identifying the features of different shapes like how many corners they have or how many sides, and using clues to work out which shape they need to make a model of.

In science the children have been out in the garden, thinking about what plants need to grow, and planting out our own vegetable patch to grow all sorts like carrots, lettuces and peas. They then chose pictures and created a document on the laptops to print and put in their science books, explaining what they did in the garden. The children have baked sponge cakes for making cake-lollies as a treat to eat on Friday afternoon, to celebrate all the hard work they’ve done this term, and have made some lovely pop-up Easter cards.

All that’s left to do is have a relaxing Easter holiday and come back refreshed in two weeks time. Hope you all have a lovely break!

6B Gardening Time!

19th March 2021Daniel Harrison

This week 6B have been focusing on gardens and minibeasts as we finished reading the story Errol’s Garden. In English the children have practiced writing questions they would ask Errol about his garden, and have planned out how they would like our patch of the school garden to be planted, labelling up their plans and then writing a checklist of what to do once we get some seeds. The children have tallied up numbers of minibeasts including snails and bees and used this information to create block diagrams. They’ve even answered questions about their data using their diagrams.

The children have weighed out ingredients to make flapjack to have as a snack during the week, and in art they have created their own insect collages using materials they’ve found in the garden. They have observed what happened to the cress we grew in different conditions, some without water and some without light, and talked about what happened to the cress and why.

Now that they’ve found out so much about plants and the school garden, the children can look forward to planting out their own patch of it next week!

6B Getting Ready for Mother’s Day

12th March 2021Daniel Harrison

This week the children have been very busy getting ready to thank their lovely parents and carers on Mother’s day by making fantastic cards and baking and decorating some biscuits as a gift. The children have been learning all about the parts of a plant, using microscopes to examine leaves, petals, pine cones and all sorts of other things in the garden, as well as setting up a science experiment to find out how cress plants are affected when they are grown without light or water. In English we’ve continued reading ‘Errol’s Garden’ and the children have written descriptions of the school garden, as well as their own dream gardens. The children have continued to learn about data and statistics, finding out about how to make block diagrams from information in tables, and have done all the other usual activities like phonics, handwriting and circle time, to name a few! They definitely deserve a break after all that hard work!

6B Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring

15th February 2021Daniel Harrison

This week 6B have been right back into it saying goodbye to winter and welcoming spring back by reading the story ‘Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring’. The children have thought about their favourite memories of winter and talked about some of the signs of spring and what they are looking forward to. They have been out in the garden, tallying up the signs of spring for maths as well as searching out the signs of spring and photographing them with the school cameras for science and computing. They’ve even been in the cookery room making pancakes to celebrate (a little late!) pancake day. What a brilliant week!

 Home Learning

Blythdale – Bubble 2

Dear Parents/Carers,

As you are aware, The Dales School is having to limit the number of children attending school each day to ensure the necessary health and safety measures are in place for both children and staff to keep everyone as safe as possible.

During this time we want to do everything we can to support you and your child at home with their learning journey. Our aim is to work closely with you to provide a personalised approach to home learning so that your child can make good progress in all areas of their development.

We recognise that every family’s situation is different and hope that you and your child are able to make good use of our offer.

  • We will telephone you each week to discuss how we can support your child.

Happy Christmas from 6B!

17th December 2020Daniel Harrison

This week the children of 6B have been doing some lovely Christmas activities including putting together their Christmas hampers, and recording Christmas messages on the iPads to send home. The children have done some great Christmas crafts like making lollystick-Santas and hanging Christmas tree decorations, as well as printing and painting to make their own sheet of wrapping paper for a gift for someone at home. The children have also learned about the story of the nativity and created their very own stained glass style windows.

From all of the children and staff in 6B, all that’s left is to say we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and we’re looking forward to seeing the children back in the new year!
